Who We Are

It is the mission of the Nanell Foundation to support causes that benefit oppressed populations and those that work towards environmental justice and conservation.

Our History

Dr Elliott Utrecht met Johanna “Nan” Merson after the passing of his beloved wife of 25 years, Sylvia. Nan’s husband had recently passed, as well. They married in 1984. Nan was an accomplished real estate developer and Elliott was a successful optometrist, who had many well known patients and donated much of his time to those in need of his expertise.

Nan and Elliott started the Nanell Foundation in 1994 with modest gifts spanning a wide range of interests including Jewish non profits, environmental, health and social justice causes.

After Nan passed in 2015, Elliott expanded his generous philanthropy not only through the foundation, but also independently.

Elliott was passionate about helping those in need, particularly through funding established charities that support efforts in the areas of health and social justice. Elliott was also passionate about the environment, having traveled much of the globe, marveling at the world’s great wonders through his camera lens.

Elliott was fortunate to have spent his life surrounded by incredibly smart and driven women, further solidifying his passion for feminism and women’s rights.

What drove Elliott most was his ability to recognize suffering and be moved to action. He had a deep desire to correct injustice and provide for oppressed peoples.

After Elliott’s passing in 2025, his and Sylvia’s daughter Robyn, granddaughter Sylvie, and “granddaughter” Jessica carry on the legacy.
